A practical typing guide

How to Type Telugu in Microsoft Word

Create Telugu text you can edit in Word. Download a DOCX from either input tool, or copy your writing into an existing document, then check the font and paragraph spacing.

Open the typing tool

Download an editable Telugu Word document

DOCX keeps the words as editable Unicode text. You can correct a name, add another paragraph or change the font in your document app. This workflow writes Telugu sounds in Telugu script; it does not translate an English sentence.

  1. Open the Telugu typing tool. Keep Telugu output selected and type a Telugu word with English letters. Choose the spelling you intend.
  2. For English names or a longer English passage, switch to English. Add your numbers, punctuation and line breaks, then review the complete text.
  3. Select Download DOCX. Wait for the document to finish preparing. The file uses the text captured when you selected the action; you can keep editing while it is prepared.
  4. Open telugu-text.docx in Word or another DOCX-compatible app. Check the text, choose your formatting and save the edited document there.

The online InScript keyboard has the same DOCX action if you prefer entering letters by key position. TXT is also available for plain-text backups. Changing a TXT filename to DOCX does not convert its file format.

Confirm the last word first.

A ready suggestion is used when exporting. A word still loading, unavailable or left unconfirmed is kept in English when no ready suggestion can be used. Read the feedback and check the downloaded result before sharing it.

Copy Telugu into an existing Word document

Choose Copy text and wait for confirmation. In Word, place the cursor where the text belongs, then paste with Ctrl+V on Windows or Cmd+V on Mac. If the destination formatting is unsuitable, try Word’s paste formatting options, such as Keep Text Only where offered.

Copied text carries the characters and line breaks. The website’s font preview and green interface are not copied. Word determines the appearance in the document. DOCX exports use simple paragraphs without a page design; add headings, lists or tables in Word afterward.

Type directly in Word with Windows Telugu input

For writing across several desktop apps, Windows also provides Telugu input. These settings are separate from this website. Microsoft’s Telugu IME instructions describe both Phonetic input and InScript:

  1. In Windows Settings, open Time & language → Language & region, add Telugu and install it. You can retain your current Windows display language.
  2. Open Telugu’s Language options. Add Telugu Phonetic if you want sound-based English-letter input; select Telugu INSCRIPT for the positional layout.
  3. Use Windows key + Space to switch installed layouts. Click in Word and type using the chosen input method.

Phonetic input offers words to choose from; InScript requires the correct key positions. Our normal and Shift layout reference documents the version used by this website. System keyboard versions and additional layers can differ. For an overview of browser and desktop choices, see Telugu typing on a computer.

Choose a Telugu font and readable spacing

The export requests Nirmala UI, a Unicode font supplied with Windows and available in Office applications. Microsoft lists Telugu among its supported scripts. Fonts are not embedded in the downloaded document. A different app or device may substitute another font.

If letters are missing, select the text and choose an installed Telugu-supporting font, such as Nirmala UI, Noto Sans Telugu or Mandali. You can compare our free font previews and installation instructions. Reopen the document app after installation. Word for the web may have a different font list from desktop Word.

Use automatic or multiple line spacing with enough room above and below the letters. Increase it if vowel signs are clipped; a fixed “Exactly” value can be too tight. Inspect a line containing కా కి క్ష, English names and digits before printing or sharing.

Check an editable sample before writing a long document

This small public sample contains a greeting, Anu, a second Telugu line, a blank line, a meeting time, emoji and punctuation. Open it, change the name and save a new copy. Compare the characters and spacing in your app before relying on the workflow for a longer document.

Downloaded copies and the browser draft are separate. Edits made in Word do not automatically return to the website. Keep a saved document for a separate backup, and enable device draft saving in the editor if you want to resume there.

Fix common document problems

  • Squares or missing characters: choose an installed Unicode Telugu font. If the original document uses an old legacy encoding, changing its font may not recover the original words.
  • Marks are cut off: increase paragraph line spacing and remove an overly small fixed line height. Review the print preview too.
  • An unfinished Roman word was exported: return to the editor, request suggestions for that word, choose the correct spelling and export again.
  • Document preparation fails: your writing stays in the editor. Retry, or use TXT/Copy as a backup. An unsupported control-character warning means a nonprinting character must be removed before DOCX can be created.
  • The font looks different on another device: document apps substitute missing fonts. Ask the recipient to use a Telugu-supporting font and check the document in their app.

The Windows steps above follow Microsoft’s documentation; labels may vary by version.
